● Departure towards the Kalivo area

The group departs by car towards the area of the Butrint Lake and Kalivo.

This time, the destination is another archaeological hill, a hidden gem, without infrastructure and without organized tourism.

This is the hill of Kalivo, hidden deep within the land, yet connected to the sea through the Vivari channel.

According to legends, this area is linked to a strategic stop during the journey of Aeneas from Troy towards the shores of Rome.

● Butrint Lake – a unique ecosystem

Butrint Lake is famous for its ideal conditions for mussel cultivation and its rich biodiversity.

The lake is surrounded by hills, forests, and rocky formations.

Some of the most notable species include:

Rare fish with ecological importance.

European eel (Anguilla anguilla), a globally endangered species.

Sea bass and gilt-head bream.

Balkan freshwater turtle (Mauremys rivulata).

Migratory birds such as flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) and the Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus).

What makes the lake unique is the coexistence of these species in a fragile ecosystem where freshwater meets saltwater.

● Kalivo area

A light walk along the lagoon and a visit to the ruins of a Roman villa in the Kalivo area, as well as a climb to the Kalivo hill to see archaeological remains from the prehistoric period.
